Time to Find a Back to School Babysitter

As summer starts to wind down, it is that time again to find an after school babysitter for the upcoming school year. Don’t wait too long. School will start before you know it.

Don’t stress…we have five easy tips to finding the right back-to-school babysitter.

1. Check out local colleges and universities. While your kids are preparing for back to school, college students are doing the same. These students often make some of the best and most responsible babysitters that you can find anywhere. Many can pick your kids up from school, take them to appointments and after school activities and even make them a great dinner.

2. Ask your friends– While they will not be too willing to give you the name of their favorite sitter, they may know someone else who may be able to watch your kids.

3. Ask teachers or pastors. These people know good caregivers in the area or young people who may want an after school job.

4. Arrange a swap. If you only need after school care for a few days each week, why not try to swap days with another parent? They can watch your kids the days that you need an after school sitter and, in return, you can watch their children on the days that they are in need.

5. Try an online matchmaking service. Sittercity has thousands of awesome babysitters all over the country. You can search their databases before you even sign up to find great babysitters right in your local area that would be a good fit to watch your little ones.

Babysitter Rates

Confused about babysitter rates? Finding the right babysitter can be a large undertaking. There are many things to consider such as age and experience and this is all before settling on appropriate rate.

When choosing an adequate salary or hourly rate there are a few thing to consider.

• The distance your babysitter must travel to get to your home. This can be overcome by considering adding a bonus to help combat high fuel costs.

• The rate is directly related to the number of children being watched. More children will cost more.

• The age of your child or children, infants usually warrant a higher pay rate than older children.

• The days you need covered will also play a role in the salary. If for instance you need someone over the weekend or for extended hours know that you will be required to pay more.

In addition, how much you will have to pay for a babysitter will depend on many other factors.

First and foremost will be your location. The rates will vary widely from rural to urban areas as well as certain parts of the country. For instance, what you pay in a small town will be vastly different from what you would pay in New York City!

Check the daycare centers in your area as well as talking to friends and family to get the going rates for your geographic area. Generally speaking going rates today run anywhere from $4 per hour all the way to $25 per hour.

If you are still unsure, pay the babysitter a little more than the average babysitting rates for your area.

Sittercity offers a few calculator on their site to determine the going rate in your area. In addition, babysitters will post their required babysitting rates as well.

Babysitting a Nightmare for Divorced Parents

Divorce causes many headaches related to finding a babysitter.

While married parents may be jealous of how nice it must be to be able to schedule most of one’s social life around when the kids are gone with the other parent every other weekend, there are more hassles finding childcare for single and divorced parents.

Being completely child-free and with no child care issues every-other weekend may be the best perk of being divorced if you have kids, but having to never leave the house any other time without first arranging some sort of child care arrangement can be a nightmare.

A friend I know works very odd shifts and found it almost impossible for a daycare to be open when she actually needed help. The teenagers in her area were so flaky, she could hardly trust them to babysit even in a pinch.

Luckily, some single parents have found alternate choices to help ease the burden.
Some options that work are:

1. Organizing babysitting cooperatives in your area. They coordinate their schedules so that they completely eliminate their childcare expenses, have some free time without kids and help each other even though odd shifts.

2. Try online for babysitters. There are online matching services like Sittercity that match local babysitters to parents just like a dating service matches partners. There are even backgrounds checks to avoid any scary or flaky choices!

3. Trade services. I take a friends children home from school for a few hours every week and, in turn, she provides me with free haircuts and coloring because she works for a great salon! Try seeing what you can trade with friends for babysitting and you may come out ahead and end the nightmare!

Top 5 Reasons Why You Can’t Find a Babysitter

Can’t find a babysitter? Join the club. More and more parents are struggling to find a babysitter to watch their kids.

Why? Here are some reasons why.

1. Fewer at-home moms. There are fewer at-home moms available to watch children.

2. If moms are at home, they are working there. Even the at-home moms are learning to work from home to help add to the families income in today’s economy.

3. Families are scattered. You can’t ask Grandma or Aunt Sue to watch your kids, because all of your relatives live too far away to ask.

4. Grandparents retire later. Twenty years ago, grandparents may have been able to help. Now, in many cases, they are postponing retirement and working longer.

5. You are busy! Parents don’t have time to call all over town to search for sitters!

Is there a solution so that you can actually find a sitter and go out once in a while? Some parents are finding the answer on line through babysitter matchmaking services.

There are websites out there that do a great job of matching excellent and available babysitters with families who need them. You can search through online profiles, examine other parent reviews and even do background checks on the available babysitters.

In fact, for less than the price of a night out, you can have access to as many sitters as you would like for a whole year. This even includes background checks so you know that you can feel comfortable with your choice.

It may be harder to find a sitter, but thanks to the internet…it may have just become easy again.

Fire that Babysitter Now!

Are you still letting that awful babysitter watch your children? Just because a babysitter does not harm your children physically, does not mean that this is the best choice for watching your kids. In most cases, you can do better for your kids without spending more money.

Don’t think that you can find a good babysitter? Well, you would be surprised at how easy it can be.

My first choice is always a parent-swap. This just means that you and another parent work out a schedule for watching the children on alternating days so that you can both work or go out while the other takes their kids and then you switch.

The advantage to this type of arrangement is that you know this family and the kids. You not only have a friend to watch the kids, but you also have playmates for them while they are there so they do not end up being bored or ignored by a distracted or disengaged sitter.

Another great new option is to use the internet to find great local sitters. There are websites out there, like Sittercity, that do a great job of matching great babysitters with kids who need them. Parents can look through online profiles, read other parent reviews and even do background checks on the potential babysitters.

The advantage to this type of program is that for less than the price of a night out, you can have access to as many sitters as you would like, background checks and the peace of mind that your children are being cared for by a fabulous and qualified babysitter every time that you go away.

Which more and more dual income and single parents, there is an increasing need for good babysitters, but parents have less and less time to find a good one.

To help in your search, here are some tips to find a babysitter if one is needed at your house:

1. Ask your friends- Most of your friends who have great babysitters will not want to give you their name (or you will keep them busy so they could never get out!) However, they may have some ideas to share of how they found their babysitters.

2. Local Homeschool groups - Many local Homeschool groups and organizations have lists of girls who are looking to baby sit. Many have taken a babysitting class and are ready to get started any time. The nice thing about Homeschool babysitters is that they have more control over their time than their peers who attend school and related activities.

3. Try a Swap. Ask friends if they would consider swapping babysitting nights. You take one night out and they take the other and you watch each other’s kids.

4. Consider trying an online service. There are some great websites that match parents with qualified local babysitters. They offer babysitter profiles, parent reviews, wage requirements and even background checks. It is a great option for any parent who needs to find a babysitter near them.

Dangers of Teenage Babysitters

Trying to find a babysitter? If so, it is important to consider the dangers of teenage babysitters before you hire one to watch your children.

Many parents opt to hire baby sitters for their child because of their work and relatively tied up schedules. Some would hire baby sitters who can take care of their child at their own home rather than bringing their child to a daycare center or somewhere else.

Hiring a baby sitter could be considered a very good way of ensuring that the child is kept safe at all times and is monitored closely by someone older however, the process of choosing the baby sitter in itself could already be considered a very daunting task.

Some teenagers who want summer jobs or to work after school try out babysitting and more and more parents think there is actually nothing wrong with hiring a teenager to take care of their child. However, one of the things that should be weighed when it comes to hiring a teenage baby sitter is that baby-sitting in itself requires a certain level of maturity and teenagers may not be that well equipped yet to handle this type of responsibility.

Caring for a child requires more than just opening your physical self to the one you are taking care of. True, baby sitting may require that you interact and play with the child; however, it also requires that you are able to be in command and should be someone whom the child will follow and respect. If you hire a teenager as your child’s babysitter, chances are she is not yet that mature to handle the pressures of babysitting.

You may want to look at the scenario this way:

A teenage babysitter could probably spend the most fun time with your child because their age are not that very far from each other; all the more if your baby sitter happens to have her own younger siblings. However, what will happen if your child suddenly gets caught on an accident like excessive bleeding of a wound from falling off his bike, or sudden fever and extensive vomiting?

A teenage baby sitter may not necessarily be able to handle these types of pressures and scenarios and may not be able to know what should be done.

If on the other hand, you hire an adult baby sitter or someone who has more background and experience when it comes to taking care of children, that particular baby sitter would know what to do and would not necessarily panic and rely on calling 911 or doctor.

Also, some teenage baby sitters, especially those who still go to school and will be coming from the school might have assignments and projects they need to work on immediately to meet the deadline. It is possible for them to do their homework at your home while your child is peacefully watching television. However, children have a very short attention span and would most likely move from one place to another. When this happens, your child could be at great risk.

It is therefore much better to hire adult baby sitters and those who have enough experience so that while you are at work and earning money to support your family, you can be assured that your child is being taken cared for.
